HANDLER'S RESPONSIBILITIES

Though great fun, getting and caring for a service dog requires a

complete commitment from you. A service dog requires daily grooming, exercise, interactive play time and continued training. And there is the ongoing financial responsibility of feeding, professional grooming (hair trimming) and veterinary care. These expenses are estimated to be around $2,000/year for basic care.

THE TRAINING PROCESS

Our puppies are trained multiple times a day over the course of 18 months to two years. Our training model is different from many agencies in that we involve the approved applicant in all phases of the training, not just after the dog is trained. Our goal is success of the partnership, and we have found that this model is very effective. Our Final Handlers graduate as Trainers rather than just as recipients and the love bond between them and their dog is strong and beautiful. Because of this, all applicants need to live within a "decent" drive to St. George so they can travel to the agency and participate each month. "Locals" train each week.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

If you decide that a service dog is an option you would like to explore, choose the appropriate application below to download, fill out and send in through the mail. The application consists of three parts: Client questionnaire and narrative, the medical form (filled out by your physician) and two letters of recommendation. It requires a $40 non-refundable processing fee.  In some cases, a video survey of your living arrangements will be requested.

THE APPROVAL PROCESS

Once the application is received, the Executive Director will ascertain if Loving Angel is potentially able to provide a service dog that would meet your needs.  If so, then the approval process will proceed which includes a phone interview and one or more in-person interviews with all household members.  Once that is completed, your information is presented to the Board of Directors.  If the decision is made to proceed, then you will be informed and together we will determine the personalized training program for you and your prospective dog.
